On applesauce, I noticed it advertised "Gluten Free"?

What's gluten, and why is it good to not have it?

On applesauce, I noticed it advertised "Gluten Free"?
Gluten is a protein that comes from certain grain flours, like wheat, that forms when the flour is processed separately, or as an ingredient in a food being processed/made. The only reason you would need to worry about it is if you had a nutritional condition, called Celiac (or Coeliac) Disease, that some people have where their body can't process the gluten, and it causes them digestive and other health problems.
Reply:Gluten is a composite of the proteins gliadin and glutenin. These exist, conjoined with starch, in the endosperms of some grass-related grains, notably wheat, rye, and barley. Gliadin and glutenin comprise about 80% of the protein contained in wheat seed. Being insoluble in water, they can be purified by washing away the associated starch. Worldwide, gluten is an important source of nutritional protein, both in foods prepared directly from foods containing it, and as an additive to foods otherwise low in protein.

A gluten-free diet is recommended amongst other things in the treatment of celiac disease and wheat allergy.

Reply:Because gluten is a protein in wheat, rye and barley. Many people cannot eat it, including

*those with Celiac DIsease (1 in 133 ppl have it)

*those with gulten sensitivity, non Celiac)

*children with autism often benefit from a gluten free diet

*those allergic to wheat, rye or barley

Anyways, gluten is a very common allergen and more and more push has come to label things that are GF as such (for the millions of ppl listed above who need to eat gluten free.)

Reply:Gluten is the protein in Wheat (and other grains).

It's good not to have it because wheat is a HUGE part of our diets in this country, so a lot of us are allergic to it and don't even know it. Or we might just be slowly developing an allergy or intollerance to it, and will be better off avoiding it when possible.

A lot of people have switched to a gluten free or low gluten diet and have really good health benefits. Google it!

Oh, and people with Celiac's disease cannot handle gluten at ALL.
Reply:this is a good article on gluten.

Reply:fillers such as wheat or gluten are added to most foods to make us feel as if we are eating more. stick to all natural foods and read labels.
