Ok i am looking to get a tattoo of a scene from goodfella's on my arm not because im obessessed with the movie but because of what it symbolizes to me. anyways i was looking to get this on my forearm and i was wondering if you were a patient and came into a doctors office and had the said tattoo on your arm if you would think different of them, btw the kind of doctor i would be is a pediatrician
Would it look bad if a doctor had a tattoo?
Wouldn't you wear a white doctor's coat and cover that tattoo. Honestly, I wouldn't take it seriously if my doctor had a tattoo. If his body would filled with tattoos, I wouldn't trust him as a doctor. A small tattoo is no big deal.
Reply:It's your body. Do what you want to do with it. Be aware, though, that you can't join the military anymore with tattooed arms. I know you didn't say you wanted to, but you never know what time will bring down upon you.
Reply:If it is not covered, it could hurt you professionally. Some people would think you got your MD online if you know what I mean.
Reply:I am sure that there would be alot of parents who would have their "opinions" on it- some maybe getting offended.
I know that if my doctor had a tattoo, it would make him seem more personal and less intimidating. It would make him seem real, But ultimately- who cares what people think, if you have a degree and can treat people, then it shouldn't matter (unless you own your own practice and are worried about losing patients and losing money)
If that is the case then you may want to think about it more.
People react differently in every location- where I live, tattoos are widely accepted.
Reply:I wouldn't mind in the slightest if my doctor had a tattoo. he could be covered for all i care. if you were going into geriatrics i would say that it was definitely a bad idea to get a tattoo anywhere patients could see it. as for pediatrics... a lot of people are very open to tattoos and do not mind them, but i still do not believe that it is a good idea to have a visible tattoo while practicing in such a professional profession (doesn't that sound dub). people expect a lot from their doctors and i would rather be safe than sorry. i too want to become a doctor, though i'm going into obstetrics, and i have a few tattoos, but i make sure that wherever i put them, i can easily cover them. besides, your coat should cover it. i think i only once saw my doctors arms without the jacket when i was little so do not worry about it. if you think you are going to run around the office with short sleeves and no coat, then worry about it.
Reply:personally i wouldnt care but there are many judgemental people out there. anyways if you want one you shouldnt care what other people think its your body. my friend is a nurse and some people give him cr** about it but that doesnt make him less qualified to do his job because he is really good at what he does, also look at this:

Reply:Most doctors here wear suits or scrubs. They got rid of white coats a while ago..
Put on your upper arm instead? Then you can cover it, and you know it won't become an issue.
Pediatrician shouldn't be much of a problem, but kids ask lots of questions. And some of the parents might be a little.. weirded out. It depends where you live though, and what the people are like.
Reply:for me i couldnt care less, as long as you do your job well. but other, politically correct people might be more paranoid
Reply:I worked with a medical Prof. and he freaked out cause one of his students had a earing. He went on to ask all his patients what they would think of a doctor with peircings or a tattoo and about 70% of them said it would make them feel uneasy. It is still your call though!!
Personally I thought the student doctor was rather cool - not so stiff like the other students.
Reply:Personally I think it would be a good distraction for toddlers and such, haha, They would be more amazed by your tattoo and less worried about what was going to have to be done,Like all the ones above mentioned as well it depends on your area and the type of parents you see on a daily basis, Honestly I don't think it should matter as long as you do you job, No one should be able to dictate to you what you can and can't do with your body, Here's an Idea, Why not ask the ones who really matter? Your patients and parents, Type up a little survey,With Questions targeting your concerns, Ask what parents would think if a pediatrician had a tattoo?, Would they stop bringing their kids to that doctor?,And why? Kindly ask them to take a few minutes to fill it out for you, You could tell them its for a little research,You and the receptionists have been doing about the effects of tattoos in a professional environment ,That would be what I would do, I have always wanted to become a pediatrician and I have 13 tattoos at 22, I have always loved kids and they tend to cling to me for some reason, I have had random kids ask about my piercings and tattoos they're amazed by them hehe. However all of mine can be covered if need be as well, Just a few thoughts whatever you decide good luck =) Also remember if you do decide to get it done don't be afraid to ask the artist for a portfolio, Every good artist keeps one and you want to know they're capable of properly doing such a detailed piece =)
Reply:To each his own. If my doctor had a tattoo it wouldn't change my opinion of him or her, unless it was something offensive to me (racist, sexist, etc.), but thats just me. You are not alone...there are several tattooed doctors out there. Check out www.inkedinc.com to see what I mean.
Reply:alot of today's generation has a tattoo. and those people are getting ready or already do have children. i think you would get some mixed reactions. yes it is still considered unprofessional but i worked at a place where 75% or the office staff had tattoos. my manager had finished his whole back peice a few months before i left.
personally i would go to a tattooed doctor because i know better than to think that your credentials as a doctor lie in your skin. but i am told that i am very liberal
Reply:i would think that it's kind of cool. but yet again, my husband and i have a 5 month old and both have tons of tattoos on our arms.
more conservative people might be concerned about it, but you can always wear a white lab coat on the first couple of visit with patients so they can't judge you on it. you know?
Reply:i'd prefer a heavily tattooed doctor.
I know i generalise, but tattooed people don't seem to judge other people as much.
Reply:In MY opinion it wouldnt look bad.
I, unlike MOST people, refuse to judge anothers based on their outside appearance.
As long as the doctor has the skills to take care of my problems then its all goods.
Reply:I have been looking for a doc with tattoos
hell i am sure most people with tats would like a doc with tats and i am a nurse at a major hospital so.............
