The Rent -A-Car company rents a compact car for a fixed amount each day plus a fixed amount for each mile driven. Joe spent $134 to rent a car for 5 days and drove it 450 miles. Patti spent $106 to rent the same kind of car for 4 days and drove 350 miles. Find the daily charge and the charge per mile for the compact car.

4x + 350y=106
are equals to:
20x + 1800y = 536 ......(a)
20x + 1750y = 530.......(b)
then
1. Subtruct (a) with (b)
(1800-1750)y = 6 ---%26gt; 50y=6 ---%26gt; y=6/50
--%26gt; charge per mile is $ 0.12
2. Use above result to first statement above.
5x + 450(0.12) = 134
5x + 54 = 134
5x = 80 ---%26gt; x=80/5=16
---%26gt; daily rate is $16
