A friend of mine is planning on getting her parakeet another roommate, his first mate died after trying to fly back to their cage, she flew into a wall in the process. He went through the grieving phase but judging by the way he acts I think he misses being around someone of his own kind.
His first mate has been gone for about 2-3 months now.

Yes, he's probably over it by now. When your friend gets a new parakeet it will need to be quarantined in another room for 30 days to avoid exposing the other bird to any possible sickness or disease the new bird may have. Maybe your friend could just spend more time with this bird. Most birds will be fine on their own if they are given lots of toys and attention and out of cage time.
